Dave's birthday
The cottage second from the left was the old lady's vantage point.
We set off on an already warm morning for what was due to be a short day. It was either one short day or two very long days as the accommodation was tricky to fit in around where we wanted it. And besides, it was my birthday.
We left Marazion and turned onto a low cliff path. St Michaels mount was visible on and off through gaps in the trees and hedgerows at the edge of the cliff. It was still early and already getting quite warm. As the path headed further round and St. Michaels mount slipped behind we passed several potato fields with the last one being dug by a tractor and picked up by a small army of eastern Europeans. The going was easy with no major inclines and the weather was kind although getting a little warm for me by mid morning; but then anything above freezing is a little warm for me.
We passed a few isolated cottages just above a small rocky cove. I looked around thinking what a brilliant spot to live when I saw an old lady sitting on a seat by her front door enjoying the sun, a cup of tea and the view. It would have been a fine spot for a cafe. Perhaps we should have asked if she would put the kettle on.

Porthleven
Late morning saw us arrive at Praa sands where we thought we would wander along the beach as this was usually easier going on the feet. I've no idea why, but the beach was littered with cuttle fish bones. We speculated about big storms at sea or mass cuttle fish suicide pacts but, in truth, we had no idea why there were so many washed up. Had we been closer to the end of the journey I would have collected a load and try to sell them to a pet shop for budgie cage beak sharpening duty. Not sure if there's much of a market or what they go for wholesale, but has to be worth a go if I see anything like that again.
We arrived in small harbour village of Porthleven early afternoon and sought out our B&B which was up the top of the hill on the other side of the harbour and had a fantastic view out over the sea. There was no-one at home - but we were very early so we popped back down to the harbour and stopped for a couple of pints while sitting on the quayside. Well, it was my birthday. I should point out that this was not another infringement of our 'rule'. We had reached our destination and consequently finished our walking for the day and hence we were allowed a pint. Plus - it was my birthday.
